The Natural Series – PART ONE
Finding natural products for babies is so important and isn’t always easy! Their little baby soft skin absorbs up to 60% of what we put on them. There little bodies can not detoxify chemicals as efficiently as adults can. And I cannot believe how many companies are ALLOWED to put chemicals in their baby products? Let alone adult products! I also didn’t realize until recently the importance of using baby products with little to no fragrance. I have recently found some great natural products that I thought I would share with you.
There are so many great baby products on the market that are natural and chemical free. However, don’t assume (like I have in the past) that because the label says the word “natural” that it is safe for baby. I have made that mistake and I am now really trying to make a conscious effort with doing my research. I now use apps and websites like these below to search for products while I’m at the store or at home and they help guide me through the list of ingredients and rate the product on a scale.
- EWG (Environmental Working Group) APP – www.ewg.org/apps/ I find this app really user friendly. I find that it has more products than the think dirty app below. It’s also colour coded and gives you three gages for the products (Allergy Concern, Cancer Concern, Developmental Concern). Or you can check out their website here Skin Deep (EWG). Sometimes they don’t have the item you are looking for, so I first check the think dirty app and if it doesn’t either than I check some of the main ingredients individually on their website.

Firstly, I have fallen in love with the brand LOVEFRESH recently! They are a Canadian brand based out of Toronto. Their products are formulated with natural ingredients from local and global sources and there products have a natural aroma. You can also get their products from Well.ca or augustkinn.com.

My absolute favourite product from their baby line is the baby wash! It’s so soft on Jameson’s skin and doesn’t dry him out. It also still gives little bath bubbles and doesn’t have a fragrance, just smells natural and clean! (I also LOVE how simple their bottles look <3)
When both babies were newborns I used the Earth Mama natural/ Non-scented Body Wash. I used just the smallest amount on a baby cloth and would gentle wash the baby with warm water. They love slow soft movements with the cloth and having the warm water makes for a better experience (I promise). This baby wash is truly unscented, natural, vegan and certified organic. I found it really gentle on baby’s skin. (You might also notice that all Earth Mama products have new packaging – my bottle of this is yellow).
It’s important in the beginning weeks of newborn life to just gently cleanse them with a cloth. The World Health organization recommends delaying bathing until 24 hrs after birth. Here is a great article on the benefits of delayed bathing – the bump.com – delayed bathingwhich is what most North American hospital are now doing which is great!
I also love using this Honest Company Organic Oil. It’s certified organic with jojoba, tamanu, olive, avocado, and sunflower oils. It also has organic chamomile and calendula help gently calm, and soothe skin. The oil is hypoallergenic, certified organic, vegan, biodegradable and doesn’t have any fragrances or dyes. I have used this on Jameson since he was a newborn and it’s been great for his little skin and has had no skin issues at all. You also need the smallest amount so I find it lasts forever.
For the longest time I was using the Live Clean baby lotion because I was under the assumption it was natural. However, after reading the EWG – Live Clean Lotion ratings I was a little upset when I read that the fragrance in it scored an 8 (which is a hazard and can cause irritations). So I have now switched to the LOVEFRESH as it has natural ingredients like Coconut & Avocado oil, Shea better and Aloe. It doesn’t have a scent and feels really nice on his skin.
It is not recommended to use sunscreen until the baby is 6+ months. It’s important to note that even with Sunscreen on they still need to be kept in shade (use umbrellas, sun hats and long sleeve swim suits with UV protection). Once they are able to wear sunscreen it’s important to use Zinc Oxide based ones as they don’t seep into the skin and create a barrier from the UV rays. It’s important to use natural sunscreens that are mineral based and prevent allergic reactions.
I have tried alot of natural baby sunscreens and usually because of the Zinc they can be really white and chalky – making them hard to rub in. However, this sunscreen stick goes on SO WELL! I was shocked. And makes it so much easier when your trying to quickly put sunscreen on their face! It’s 100% natural sun care stick is formulated with Non-Nano Zinc oxide and Raspberry Seed Oil to provide a natural protection for baby’s sensitive skin!
Another sunscreen I have been using and find works well is Badger SPF 30. I used this on my first baby up until he was about 18 months old. Although it is quite thick he was good about me rubbing it on and I felt it really lasted! He never got any colour with this on. It’s certified natural, biodegradable, no animal testing and has certified organic ingredients.
As Logan got older I started using the Thinkbaby Safe Sunscreen as it goes on a little easier than the Badger and is water resistant for when they are swimming or at the splash pads. It’s free of biologically harmful chemicals (No Avobenzone, Oxybenzone or UV Chemical absorbers).
I also plan on trying the Boo Bamboo Sunscreen , Green Beaver Natural Mineral Sunscreen and Coola Baby Mineral Sunscreen this summer! I will be doing a separate post just on natural sunscreens later on and will let you know how they hold up!
While nursing both babies I loved using the Earth Mama Organic Nipple Butter. Certified by Oregon Tilth and Non-GMO Project Verified, Earth Mama Organics Organic Nipple Butter is a lanolin-free, zero toxin calendula nipple cream. It’s vegan and safe for both baby and mama and no need to wash it off between feedings.
I also used this Shoosha Rescue Nipple Butter with my first baby and found it really helpful. This nipple butter uses organic ingredients like Organic Avocado Oil, Organic Calendula Oil, Organic Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil and Organic Cocoa Butter. It’s all natural, vegan, paragon free, cruelty free, hypoallergenic and uses no authentic ingredients or fragrances.
I have been using these Baby Boo Bamboo Wipes recently and really like them. They use Certified Organic Bamboo extract and vitamin E to help strengthen and protect baby’s delicate skin. They have no synthetic fragrances or colours. They are also echo-friendly and biodegradable. You can get them at Well.ca or at a discounted rate from winners if your lucky!
I also like getting these Seventh Generation Wipes they are free of Alcohol, dyes, parabens, fragrance, phthalate and are hypoallergenic. I also like that you can buy these in bulk! You can also find them at Loblaws Superstore!
Since my second baby was born I have been using Abundance Naturally Baby Balm for when I see a small irritation on his little bum. He finds it soothing and it’s really gentle if he is starting to get a rash. I find any of the baby balms with Calendula work the best. This is a Canadian made balm with natural ingredients: Calendula (which reduces inflammation and kills bacteria with soothing irritation), Chickweed, Goldenseal, Marshmallow root, lavender and sandalwood.
The LOVEFRESH baby bottom butter is Zinc based with other natural ingredients , coconut oil, Calendula, Beeswax and Aloe Vera (to name a few). It has no scent to it and goes on so smoothly and creates a moisture barrier to protect against rashes.
Lastly, when baby has a cold I use the Crane Teardrop Humidifier and put a few drops of essentials oils in. It really helps clear any congestion up and makes his room smell like a mini spa 🙂 (I usually use Lemon/ Eucalyptus / Peppermint)
Here is a list of other natural companies that make safe products for baby…
- Attitude (Shoppers also sells this brand now)
- babyganics (you can also get at buybuy baby)
- California baby
- Zoe Organics (I have been trying to get their “heal anything balm” but it’s always sold out)
- Babo Botanicals
- Green Beaver
Thanks for reading as always! And if you have any great natural suggestions I would love to hear them!
